Quality olive oil and its role in the kitchen is no new subject here on the vine. In fact, it is a recurring one. Yet this time, we’re not just talking quality EVOO and recipes, we’re talking the quality Go Red campaign sponsored by the American Heart Association. February was a month to raise awareness and funding for the Go Red for Women. Heart Disease is the number one killer of women in our country, even surpassing all forms of Cancer. That’s a startling statistic and We Olive wasted no time to step up to the plate and see how they could contribute as a company. So, a month long promotion was held to raise awareness and donations for the charity. The month concluded last night with a local wine and tapas tasting in their LJ store & wine bar. Tapas? Fine wines? Artisan oils? What could be more appealing?! Well, maybe the fact that ALL proceeds of the night’s event were donated to the AHA. I’d say those are some worthy eats! I was lucky to grab a limited spot and a great time it was for all attending.
The night was focused on small food parings with unique CA wines and their array of extra virgin olive oils. We went through six thoughtfully prepared courses, and were able to sample some phenomenal wines with each. Many flavors of oil complimented the dishes, which was a great way to learn about olive oil & wine pairings. I was surprised just how flavorful a little addition of infused oil can make a dish. Here is what goodness was on our table:
Yum! I think my favorites were the Meyer lemon tabbouleh salad and the last, sweet course of pears with orange honey and EVOO with a creamy brie. Oh, and don’t forget the Handley Brut Rose. Don’t mind if I do! Speaking of heart health, olive oil itself helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure as part of a healthy diet, so even more the reason to get cooking with some STAT…
There were raffle prizes and discounted retail wine & oil for purchase. I couldn’t resist and picked up a new bottle to try, a CA red, Medlock Ames. Let you know how that one turns out!
