Santa-Ana Sunday Sangria

Desert winds & lack-there-of humidity made for summer-like conditions today. Just the right climate for beach-side strolling & a cool libation, if I do say so! I decided 84 degrees was perfectly parch-inducing for some sangria. Farmer’s Market fruits and CA red wine make for a twist on this Spanish favorite, which I can’t help but want every now and again.

I started making this red version of sangria in college and it is a nice addition for summer BBQs, or any time a refreshing drink is in order. Easy & crowd pleasing! Mine is pretty basic though other awesome recipes exist, but I love this quick version sans any added sugar. Impromptu gathering? Bring it! Here’s the skinny:

Fresh fruit is the crowning jewel of this bueno beverage and here’s what we went with:

  • 3 cups red wine, a good merlot, but nothing too fancy :)
  • 1/2 cup blackberry brandy
  • 1 cup sparkling water, lime infused, like Arrowhead
  • 1/2 large granny smith, green apple, thinly sliced & diced
  • 1/2 small lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 sweet orange or Tangelo, thinly sliced. Use other half for fresh juice
  • 1/4 cup blackberries, fresh
  • other fruit optional (like blueberries, plums, or raspberries!)

Mix over some ice, or even better yet crushed ice. Add a squeeze of the juice from the tangelo you sliced above. And now we have the perfect compliment to a sunny Sunday afternoon… I Hope the weekend treated you well, enjoy!
