Finding Finch’s

Nestled among the street-side retail shops of La Jolla, exists a secluded wine bar & restaurant with a quaint European charm. If you’ve already found Finch’s Wine Bar and Bistro on Girard, you’ve found a go-to spot for a generous wine list and gourmet dishes, all amidst an unpretentious & relaxed atmosphere. I had the pleasure of finding Finch’s as part of a local Grubsprawl event last fall. It was my first stop of the tour and could have very well been my last, because the food was absolutely delicious! You can find your way to Finch’s for just a drink, tapas, or a full dinner. I decided it was about time to venture back and enjoy some wine and a small plate…

I wasn’t sure what to order and luckily Sterling was there hosting the bar. He was able to guide us towards the wine specials for the day, one of which we really enjoyed, the 2008 Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon, Cabernet Savignon. It was my first time having this & it was dry & pleasant. Definitely had some casis & chocolate flavors going, with a bit of cherry too. We also tried a French red, Belleruche, a blend of Grenache & Syrah, and I think my favorite of the two. The bottle itself was even unique, with a label studded in braille- pretty cool & a first for me!

Our next quandry was deciding which small plate to order! Sterling recommended a favorite, so we opted to try the Crab Avocado Sopes. I wouldn’t have normally chosen this dish, but very glad I did. Great flavor combination, with the crispness of the masa & the fresh lump blue crab… all kicked-up with a hot salsa for dipping. I could have eaten another order easily! My next visit will be for dinner. I am already eager to have several dishes on their menu – the Sqaush Blossoms Tempura, Pistachio Crusted Salmon, and I will have no available willpower to turn down the Chocolate French Toast Sandwich with Maple Bourbon Bacon Sauce with Ice Cream. That’s a serious dessert! Check out their full menu online Next time you’re out enjoying the cove, mosey-on over to Finch’s and enjoy a very nice end to your day…
